The Congreso de los Pueblos (People’s Congress) faces yet another incidence of legal and political persecution. Jimmy Alexander Moreno, a spokesperson and leader of our movement, as well as Cumbre Agraria Campesina Etnica y Popular and the National Strike Committee, was detained by police this morning in the city of Popayan. At the time of writing we do not have further details. Our human rights and legal teams are leading our response to the situation.
This is the latest in of a wave of trumped up judicial cases, smears and stigmatization, all of which is part of the Colombian state’s genocidal policies against social movements and human rights organizations in order to deter mobilization and inhibit social action in defense of life and territory. Another clear example of this policy are the ongoing trumped up legal cases against our leaders Robert Daza, Teofilo Acuña, and Adelso Gallo, as well as Jose Murillo, who has been deprived of his liberty in the La Picota jail in Bogota for over 21 months.
We call upon the broader social movement, human rights organizations and international human rights organisms to help to make visible and condemn this situation and to reject this ongoing persecution of social leaders and popular organizations.
