They Shall Not Pass!

LA COLOSA GOLD MINE

CAJAMARCA, TOLIMA-COLOMBIA

Conference: Saturday, 4 June 10am – 5pm

Hodge Jones and Allen LLP,

180 North Gower Street, London NW1 2NB.

AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) is one of the most important companies that undertake open cast gold mining using cyanide, one of the most polluting and dangerous industrial activities in the world. Enriched during the apartheid epoch in South Africa, they are now moving to operations across the South, and perpetrating all kinds of human rights violations. AGA has a deplorable track record in several African countries including Ghana and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

AGA is the company that has the potential to generate the highest number of social, environmental and political conflicts in Colombia. It has about 800 000 hectares of mining rights for a thirty year period in 20 departments.

AGA was recently given the Public Eye award for being the "most irresponsible company in the world" due to the social and environmental problems it has caused in Ghana. This emphasises the importance of improving our understanding about this company and how we can support communities fighting it.

Speakers:

Alexander Martínez Rivillas is a lecturer in the Department of Agrarian Development in the Agronomy Faculty of the University of Tolima, and author of a risk study on the La Colosa project. See http://sites.google.com/site/alexandermartinezrivillas/

Alejo Pulido is researching the activities of AngloGold Ashanti in Chocó, a zone of high biodiversity where the corporation’s activities threaten to contaminate the Atrato and San Juan rivers, displacing AfroColombian and Indigenous communities.  Formerly worked for CENSAT Agua Viva (Friends of the Earth Colombia), Alejo is currently in solidarity groups based in Valencia, Spain.

Plus speakers from Africa and India; the launch of the report of a CSC fact finding delegation; documentary film in Spanish and English on AGA in Ghana. Workshops, debates, planning action.

Colombia Solidarity Campaign 7pm meets third Thursday of every month. Next meeting 17 May. Talk by veteran trade unionist from the metal workers industry in Colombia.
