THE HISTORY OF INEQUALITY IN EL CERREJON |
Representatives of coal miners' union SINTRACARBON from the Cerrejon mine in La Guajira presented the union's demands to British-based multinational BHPBilliton plc at its annual shareholders' meeting on Thursday 25 October. The company is one-third owner of the Cerrejon mine. Among other things, the union called on the company to come to a just settlement with the displaced community of Tabaco and to improve its treatment of other communities facing displacement. The union attributed the improvement in the company's behaviour in recent months to international pressure. On 21 October in Riohacha, Colombia, the union agreed a statement to be presented to BHPBilliton shareholders at the company's AGM. Here is the statement, with an English translation below. |
